Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the black streaks on my roof?

The black streaks on your roof is a live organism called- algae. Roof algae is a bacteria that spreads out through the air and grows mostly in humid and warm areas, such as the South Florida region.

  • What types of roofs does roof algae grow on?

Roof Algae grows both on shingle roofs and on tile roofs.

  • Why should you have your roof cleaned?
  1. Prolong the life of your roof- One of the main components in roof shingles is lime stone sand. The main functions of limestone are to add weight and strength to the shingles, and to balance/reflect out the heat of the sun. Unfortunately the roof algae’s favorite food happens to be the little lime stone crystals that are the protective component of the shingles. Algae also grows on tile roofs, since tile is a rock based material. Roof algae should always be treated with non pressure detergent applications. The usage of the opposite- the high pressure water- will not kill the roof algae and most likely the roof algae will grow back in a few months time. What’s even more important is that the high pressure of the water will wash away the limestone crystals and will shorten the life of the roof drastically. So once again make sure to ask your contractor if he/she uses a non pressure detergent application on your roof, that permanently kills the algae.
  2. Improve drastically the curb appeal of your property- It has been proven by Realtors that houses with clean roofs sell with 30 % to 40% more than houses with dirty roofs. Please take a look at our gallery page to see the huge difference on the before and after pictures.
  3. Avoid health issues -contact with algae or mold bacteria can lead to the development of allergies and health issues especially for kids.
